Citizen Legislator: Gail Schwartz
By Lynn Bartels, Rocky Mountain News

Sen. Gail Schwartz biked through Colorado three times with Ride the Rockies, an incredible feat for a woman who was told she might never walk again after surviving a car accident that killed her 8-year-old daughter.
Schwartz, 57, worked for Pitkin County’s housing authority and served on the University of Colorado Board of Regents before being elected to the Senate last year.
The Snowmass Village Democrat advocates for water, education and rural economic development.
She and her husband, Alan Schwartz, have three daughters: Rachel, 18, Aime, 20, and Brendan Ash, 29. Their first child, a son, died when he was five days old because of medical problems.
